Atatürk University extends its educational mission beyond its campuses through community-based educational activities, school visits, voluntary student-led projects, practical workshops and awareness programmes. These initiatives connect university students and academic staff with children, schools and local communities, supporting access to educational experiences outside conventional higher education settings.
During 2025, the University continued its educational outreach through its Social Responsibility Projects framework (Toplumsal Duyarlılık Projeleri), faculty-led initiatives and student volunteering. Documented activities included educational visits to rural schools, environmental education workshops for primary school children and community-oriented learning projects.
Through these activities, Atatürk University contributes to lifelong learning, educational inclusion and university–community cooperation.
1. Institutional Framework for Education Outreach
Social Responsibility Projects Application and Research Centre
Atatürk University’s Social Responsibility Projects Application and Research Centre (Toplumsal Duyarlılık Projeleri Uygulama ve Araştırma Merkezi) provides an institutional framework for activities addressing community needs.
The Centre supports projects developed by academic staff and students, including initiatives involving local schools, children, environmental awareness and social inclusion.
Its activities help connect academic knowledge and student volunteering with practical community engagement.
Faculty-Based Social Responsibility Education
The University’s faculties also incorporate community engagement into educational activities.
Students participate in projects addressing social and educational needs, developing practical experience while contributing to communities outside the University.
These activities provide a mechanism for translating university learning into community-oriented educational practice.

2. Educational Outreach to Rural Schools in 2025
2.1. Başçakmak Primary and Secondary School Visit
Project: Başçakmak İlk ve Ortaokulu Ziyareti (Eskipolat)

In April 2025, students from Atatürk University’s Faculty of Tourism participated in a voluntary social responsibility project at Başçakmak Primary and Secondary School.
The project was undertaken in cooperation with the Aziziye Youth Centre and focused on providing educational and recreational activities for children attending a rural school.
The initiative was designed to address the limited opportunities for social, cultural and educational activities that some children in rural communities experience.
University students participated in activities intended to support children’s social and cultural development, encourage interaction and strengthen connections between the University and the local community.
The project also provided opportunities for university students to develop volunteering, communication and social responsibility skills.
Educational outreach contribution:

3. Environmental Education Through Practical Workshops
3.1. Recycling Plastic Bottles with Primary School Children
Project: Geri Dönüşümde Pet Şişeler (Recycling Plastic Bottles)

Atatürk University carried out a community-oriented educational activity designed to increase environmental awareness among primary school children.
The project introduced children to the importance of recycling and reusing everyday materials through a hands-on creative activity.
Participants used discarded plastic bottles to make pencil holders, demonstrating how materials commonly regarded as waste can be repurposed into useful objects.
The activity combined environmental education with practical learning, encouraging children to participate actively rather than simply receive information.
The project supported:

4. Student-Led Social Responsibility Projects in 2025
4.1. Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences
Atatürk University’s Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences incorporates social responsibility projects into its educational activities.
During the Spring Semester of 2025, the Faculty reported the implementation of 59 social responsibility projects.
These initiatives addressed a range of social and community issues, including:
- Women’s rights and social awareness.
- Inclusion of individuals with disabilities.
- Environmental sustainability.
- Animal welfare.
- Solidarity with migrant communities.
- Community health and social well-being.
The Faculty’s official project listings include activities addressing digital awareness, smoking prevention, resource conservation and community rights.
These projects demonstrate the scale of the University’s student-led social engagement framework.
Although not every social responsibility project constitutes an educational outreach activity beyond campus, the programme provides an important institutional mechanism through which students develop and implement community-oriented initiatives.

4.2. Department of Sociology: 24 Social Responsibility Projects

The Department of Sociology reported that students developed 24 different social responsibility projects during the 2024–2025 academic year.
The projects addressed topics including:
- Children’s rights.
- Environmental awareness.
- Digital security.
- Women’s entrepreneurship.
- First aid.
The projects were conducted as part of the Social Responsibility Projects course under academic supervision.
They enabled students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world social issues and develop practical approaches to community needs.
The Department also prepared a project report book documenting the activities.
These initiatives demonstrate the University’s systematic approach to student-led community engagement and the potential for outreach through educational and awareness activities.

5. Educational Inclusion and Support for School Learning Environments
5.1. Colourful Ideas, Bright Future
Project: Renkli Fikirler, Parlak Gelecek
Period: March–June 2025
Project type: University-supported social responsibility project
The project focused on improving physical learning environments in schools through voluntary activities.
Its objectives included creating more welcoming and motivating classrooms and school spaces, supporting children’s engagement with their educational environment.
The project proposed painting selected school walls and classrooms to create more colourful and attractive learning spaces.
Although this initiative primarily concerns the improvement of school environments rather than direct instructional delivery, it complements the University’s educational outreach by supporting conditions conducive to children’s learning.

6. Voluntary Student Participation in Community Education
Student volunteering is an important component of Atatürk University’s outreach model.
Through supervised social responsibility projects, students can participate in activities addressing community needs while applying knowledge acquired during their university education.
The documented 2025 projects demonstrate different forms of participation:
School-based activities: University students work directly with children in educational settings outside campus, as illustrated by the Başçakmak school project.
Practical learning workshops: Participants engage in hands-on activities designed to communicate environmental concepts, as demonstrated by the plastic bottle recycling project.
Community awareness initiatives: Students develop projects addressing social rights, environmental responsibility, digital security and other issues affecting local communities.

7. Geographic Reach and Community Partnerships
Atatürk University’s outreach activities extend into Erzurum and its surrounding districts.
The Başçakmak Primary and Secondary School project provides a documented example of educational engagement in a rural school setting, while the recycling project demonstrates practical learning activities designed for children outside the University’s regular student population.
The cooperation between the Faculty of Tourism and the Aziziye Youth Centre also illustrates how university outreach can be supported through partnerships with local organisations.

9. Contribution to SDG 4 – Quality Education
Atatürk University’s educational outreach activities demonstrate its commitment to extending learning opportunities beyond university campuses.
